How Do I Obtain a Cyprus Work Permit?
Updated: Jan 6, 2020
Any person who wishes to work in Cyprus but does not hold a European Union passport (or are not citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland), must apply for a work permit. Companies wishing to hire non-EU citizens must apply to obtain a work permit for their prospective employee(s).
The process of obtaining a work permit in Cyprus is simple and easy. Here are some frequently asked questions to help you understand the process and what is required:
1. What documents will I need to provide?
You will need to provide:
a valid passport,
your original employment contract with the seal of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance and stamped with a revenue stamp from the Revenue Stamps Registrar,
the employer-company’s tax clearance certificate,
the existing staff employed by your employer,
original Certificate of police clearance issued from your country of origin,
original Certificate of Medical clearance,
A Bank Guarantee Letter,
Proof of health insurance,
the signed application for the work permit along with the required fee.
2. How long does it take for the application to be processed?
Typically, it takes approximately 4-6 weeks for the application to be processed and the work permit to be issued.
3. Who makes the application?
The employer (the company hiring) sends the application on behalf of the employee being hired. EAG Law firm advises clients on the procedure and can prepare and submit the application on behalf of the employer.
4. For how long is the work residence permit valid?
The Cyprus Work Resident Permit is generally valid for a period of 4 years unless you are working in the agriculture, livestock, and farming sectors, for which the duration is 6 years.
The work residence permit does not have a time limit if you are either (a)n:
(a) highly skilled worker in a company with a high income (over a million or hundreds of thousands euros) which is beneficial to the economic development of Cyprus,
(b) religious icon painter (you may remain until the project is finished),
(c) journalist or correspondent,
(d) athlete or athletic coach.
5. When do I apply to renew my work residence permit?
You have to apply to renew your Cyprus residence permit for employment at least 1 month before it is due to expire.
Once you obtain your work permit, you may then use this to apply for a work visa.
